I bought mine in early 2003 when I worked for Outward Bound and I needed something rugged, waterproof and tough enough to resist everything mother nature throws out.
I was deciding between this Casio watch and one of the more expensive and more flashy plastic Suunto Vector ones. I went with the Casio because it was titanium steel shell which, on paper and from pratice, is more way more durable than plastic. I previously owned a Nike Triax ergonomic Plastic shell runner's watch that cracked on the door knob as I exited a bathroom at the Movies about a week after I bought it. So when it came to my outdoor pursuits, plastic was out of the question since plastic bands also respond poorly to long exposure under sunlight, extreme cold, salt and heat.
I made the descision to get the ProTrek in jan 2003 and now its jan 2009, 6 years later, and the watch still looks like new and performs like new.
I don't use the functions all the time, but when I need them they all work well and over all the watch is dependable. The booklet is well written and shows you how to calibrate the calculations easily. The watch uses barometric pressure to calculate the other altimeter data during your climbs. So I suggest calibrating the higher functions of the watch each time after long periods of non use (Since most of us aren't climbing Everest every day). It is easy and take a few seconds of tinkering. Once calibrated, all the functions work perfectly. The compass looks cool and works quickly and flawlessly. The compass didn't need calibrating in the entire time I used it.
My only issue is the Temperature Function. Since the watch sits on your wrist and the thermometer is on the underside against your skin, the read out will always be close to your body's temperature. To get the ambient temperature you have to take the watch off and either hook it on your backpack or off your belt and then wait about 5 minutes for it to adjust to the proper temperature of your surroundings. That said, I wish the temperature probe was on the topside of the watch and the data came quicker. I needed about 5 minutes at least to wait for the proper temperature to read out after removing the watch from my wrist. This is not a major issue for me.
A wonderful bonus is the automatic light feature. In the dark when you tilt the watch's face up to your head the light comes on automatically. Another bonus is the demo display mode. This mode is similar to a computer's screensaver, but instead it continuosly flashes between the various data the watch provides. So you get compass, baro, alti, time, etc... at 1-2 second intervals.
I totally recommend this watch for anyone looking for something that is not too gimmicky, or childish, and will last a long long time.
They are lots of online website that still sells them for cheap or you can get the newer version ProTrek that use solar power. with my recommendation for this watch I will also add not to get the plastic version of the Protrek simply because of durability and you can get the titantuim version for almost the same price. For those allergic to metals (I'm also very allergic to cheap metals like pewter and low grade steel and found the ProTrek Titanium to be fine against), Casio makes a version of this specific with cloth/nylon strap.

You can't break this watch! I've owned this model for a couple of years. Cover it in mud, sand, grease, it just doesn't matter. The best outdoor and work watch I've ever owned in my life. When this one finially breaks or I loose it, I bet I loose it before it breaks, I'll buy another one.

I am very satisfied with this watch.
The only blind side of this watch is its big size.
I have to release the button of a sleeve when I take off my shirt.
It's tho only somewhat inconvenient point.

My husband loves this watch. He had one in the past with a rubber band and it lasted for years. He finally broke the band and wanted another one. I found this watch which has a metal like band. He loves it even more than the last one. Rugged with all the gadgets. Top notch watch for sure. It also looks a little dresser that than the one with the rubber band.
